About Our School

Commitment to Excellence

The Galway School of ITF Taekwon-Do was founded on 9th October 1993 by Master Robert Howard (then 4th Degree)

and Mr. Mark O'Donnell (then 2nd Degree)

as the newest of the Republic of Ireland Taekwon-Do Association member schools in Ireland. The primary goal of the Galway School of ITF Taekwon-Do is to produce technically and mentally excellent students of the art as taught by the Founder, General Choi Hong Hi. The schools featured on this website are the only ones in the West and Midlands of Ireland to be officially recognised by the International Taekwon-Do Federation.

This commitment to excellence is a common thread in all of the school's activities. The emphasis is on quality rather than quantity. ITF Taekwon-Do has flourished in the West of Ireland since it's introduction in 1993 and will continue to do so in the future. Several of the Galway school's students have gone on to become Instructors in their own right. Mr Adam Fox, who started training in Taekwon-Do at the very first class held in Galway has gone on to promote to 3rd Degree Black Belt, and has represented Ireland at several ITF European Championships as well as the 2001 World Championships in Italy. He won a silver medal at the 2001 Europeans in Spain.

Master Howard and Mr. O'Donnell opened the first ITF School in the midlands in 1998 when Taekwon-Do was established in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. This school has progressed at a steady pace since and already has produced no less than five Black-belt students. One of whom, Mr. Joe Gill 2nd degree, has represented Ireland at European championship level and at many international events. Mr. Gill is now the assistant instructor to the Athlone school.

Mr. John Paul Ganley 2nd Degree and Mr Paul Foley 1st Degree, who have also represented Ireland at European Championship level, branched out in 2000 and opened their own School in Tuam, Co. Galway which has grown and developed successfully since then.

Since their foundation, the ITF/RITA Taekwon-Do Schools in the region have helped hundreds of people to achieve a high standard in Taekwon-Do and to improve their whole way of life, and have helped many students to reach Black-belt level. The instructors are deeply committed to ensuring that General Choi's Taekwon-Do is promoted, developed, and expanded in the region in the years to come, and that our goal remains the pursuit of excellence in the Art.
